You, Me, Church

How to use the Lessons

When you plan a Children’s Sermon as part of a church Worship Service, consider where you will be and where the children will sit.  Our church had several steps where I could sit with them, which permitted me to take a squirmer or wanderer onto my lap as needed.  It is important to be on their level rather than looking down at them.  Squatting to face your audience can be uncomfortable and perhaps dangerous.  Get as comfortable as you can.

Determine also whether you will use a hand-held microphone or wireless lapel microphone or headset.  Check beforehand to be sure the batteries are good and the mike working.

How long should your message be?  The attention span of children, away from mom and dad, is 3-5 minutes.  Make only one point, illustrate it, repeat and tie it to a lesson, then offer a prayer at the end.

You can involve them with a question but be aware there are 2 possibilities when you hold a microphone near a child–they’ll either freeze or ham it up.  In either way, you can lose control quickly.

Giving a treat?  I try to do that on special occasions, not every Sunday. If you give children candy, be sure to include instructions about disposing of paper wrappers properly.
